Running a business is a 24/7 pursuit and can be a tremendous effort where each aspect of the day-to-day operations must be carefully managed, while still putting effort into plans and processes for the future. For anyone who runs a business, even the 24/7 commitment may not seem like enough time to accomplish all the goals within the business, which is why having a trustworthy, dedicated and creative team of employees becomes a vital part of businesses today. Building a “dream team” of employees is rarely coincidental, yet, it is essential for the success of a business. By investing in the “community” of employees through team development and team building, employers and business owners are, in fact, investing in better business.

Employee morale (we sometimes call it, “Social Capital”) is one of the most overlooked aspects of business, yet, it has an effect on all a wide range of business issues. The old image of co-workers crowding around a water cooler has been replaced by faceless employees sitting in cubicles, creating a corporate culture of disconnection between the very people who are expected to work together to make a business a success. Team building exercises and programs can provide a means for employees to learn about each other, and how to better work together, increasing the value of a business through the development of the team.

Benefits of team building and team development programs:

  • Promotes cooperation and collaboration over competition in the workplace.
  • Encourages team-based problem solving skills that can still recognize the individual.
  • Increases team member skills for clear and effective communication.
  • Increases opportunities for communication between employees.
  • Creates an “even playing field” for employees and management to discuss ideas and plans.
  • Strengthens employees’ commitment to the organization.
  • Infuses a positive, creative corporate/business culture.
  • Stimulates innovation and cutting edge thinking.
  • Facilitates higher productivity, motivation and confidence.
  • Acknowledges an employee’s need to feel appreciated.
  • Can significantly lower operating costs.

These benefits are not only personal to employees, but, can establish a better overall image of a business or corporation. When a person feels good about working, that person contributes back to the business in a positive manner, accruing an “interest” of sorts that continues to build within the business. With a whole team of people feeling more empowered, appreciated and connected, a business has no choice but to succeed.  A spirited team creates spirited clientele; spirited clients want you to succeed!

As Richard Branson has said, “A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts.” Team development and team building activities are all about creating that investment in your business.
